REGRESSIVE TAXATION AND HEALTH
Most folks, from any political persuasion, are not happy about regressive taxation. Sales taxes, usage taxes and taxes on basic commodities that take a much bigger chunk, percentage wise, of a lower or middle class budget. However, the discussion about taxing sugar in drinks really hits me as sensible. First of all sugar drinks do add to the increase the incidence of diabetes, overweight, heart and blood pressure problems as well as overall good psychological wellbeing.
So, I am in favor of taxing sugar in any reasonable way but if we don't make the tax high enough it will do little to help solve the health problem and bring down healthcare costs. It didn't work with tobacco until the tax got big enough to get everyones attention. It really hasn't had much of an effect on liquor. I'm afraid the businesses involved will not fight a small tax too much but a large one will run into all kinds of lobbying with all kinds questionable reasoning.
THINK ABOUT IT!
